The beam is not quite a long as it appears. Gancher's beam has a dead zone immediately in front of him, however he covers it with a fire based AoE centered around him. Not 100% sure, but it seems the beam doesnt fire near the mob's feet - perhaps moving your entire squad right up to his belly would also help? I wiped first time i encountered it as well, but managed to kill it right after with only 2 deaths (of 4). Medic has an ability that helps a lot if one of your guys cant get out of the way fast enough. It is possible to relocate your crew so they dont get hit by the beam somewhat. Just encountered this one for the first time myself. For several seconds and clicks afterwards it is turned into a green targetting reticule, completely disabling me from ordering my goons from attacking enemies!
